Advancements in remote sensing (RS) technology over the past four decades have resulted in the application of RS data in a wide range of disciplines including agriculture, forestry, urban studies, and water resources. RS data are acquired from different platforms that employ different modes to generate images with varying characteristics. Knowledge of the different platforms, imaging modes and resulting image characteristics is critical to selection of the appropriate RS data for a particular application. This chapter of the knowledge portal gives an overview of RS technology by discussing the common RS platforms, imaging modes and characteristics of images produced. Examples of commercial and open access platforms that are widely used for agricultural applications are given.
