This section provides an overview of equipment used for measuring the variables mentioned under the above farm level survey categories. Our focus is on instruments that we have rcently used in projects. A brief explanation of the mode of operation of each instrument is given (with relevant references to manuals) and obtainable data formats are elaborated upon. We discuss:
- Locational equipment: handheld and kinematic GPS for measuring field boundaries, area and ground control points;
- Equipment for monitoring crop growth: for example, AccuPAR, measuring rod/tape and SPAD;
- Equipment for measuring other biophysical factors: automatic weather stations, manual rain gauges and soil moisture devices.
